Importance of This Report from An IT Consulting Firm

Distributed Denial of Service or DDoS attacks have increased significantly according to a recent report of an IT consulting firm. This percentage is in comparison to the DDoS attacks reported in the first half of 2023 by Gcore Radar Report. These findings are significant for IT consulting firms as they give them an idea of the trend to watch out for in the quickly changing landscape of cybersecurity

IT Consulting Firm Reports DDoS Attacks Increase 46 Percent in First Half 2024

IT Consulting Firm Reports DDoS Attacks Increase 46 Percent in First Half 2024

Significance of the Numbers

The 46% increase in the number of cases of DDoS attacks in the first half of the year 2024 is based on the cases in 2023, for the same period. These incidents seemed to have peaked in the second quarter of this year, with over 400 thousand cases. Similarly, there is a slight increase in the power of these attacks from 1.6 Tbps (terabits per second) in 2023 to 1.7 Tbps this year. Despite this small rise, IT consulting firms acknowledge that it shows an increased threat. This is considering that an attack with only 300Gbps (gigabits per second) of power can already provide significant damage to unprotected servers

Top Targets

According to the report, almost half of the attacks in 2024 were aimed towards gaming and gambling sectors. Because of the increased competitiveness and money-involved, this industry has become particularly enticing for cyber criminals. In line with this, it was also noted that the tech industry had twice as many incidents as last year, totaling about 15%. This is particularly alarming for IT consulting companies considering that this involves other services connected to this industry such as networking and servers. Other industries included in the top targets for DDoS include finance, e-commerce and telecommunication.

Attack Types, Duration and Customization

For the gaming, telecommunication and tech industries, hackers usually deploy the network layer attack. This is the kind of attack that disrupts operations by overloading the bandwidth hence, end consumers are unable to access the site in real time. On the other hand, application layer attacks that are usually targeting the finance, media and e-commerce sectors. This kind of attack targets the application that is running the service to disrupt it.

In both types of attacks, the majority lasts only for 10 minutes. However, what is more concerning is the intensity of the attack and how often it happens. In the same vein, it was observed by IT consulting companies that hackers are customizing the attacks depending on the industry. For example, they overload servers in gambling sites so that players get irritated by the disruption and therefore would go towards the gambling site’s competitor. Similarly, for banks and other financial institutions, they can lengthen the time of the attacks and service loss. This therefore forces companies to pay up to resume service.
